It will also assist the student in gathering relevant information which will help in completing the final project. This interview assignment requires a (1) face-to-face interview, (2) a written section comprising a (a) brief description, (b) a verbatim of the interview and (c) written feedback about what the student learned.

  • Interview Preparation
  • Interview
  • Written Assignment

Contact a person who has had 2 or more years of experience as a Youth Minister and request a 30 minute face-to-face interview for the purposes of completing an “Interview Assignment” for this class. (If setting up an in-person interview is problematic due to geographic distance or other hindering issue, this interview can be a Skype or Facetime interview. A phone interview would need to be approved by the instructor.) Let the Youth Minister (or former Youth Minister) know that this is a required assignment in which you will be asking 5 to 10 basic questions about Youth Ministry and the interview should not take more than 30 to 40 minutes.

Arrive a few minutes early to the interview. Make sure the office door is open and that you and the interviewee are not alone in the building or office area or location. Begin with only a few minutes of rapport before letting the interviewee know that you will be asking several questions for the assignment. Here is a list of questions that you might prepare to ask, but make sure to ask the ones with an asterisk:

  • What do you like most about this position?
  • (*) How would you describe your Philosophy of Ministry (for youth)?
  • What is your approach in enlisting and training volunteers?
  • What is most difficult about this job?
  • (*) What advice would you give to a new Youth Pastor concerning his or her supervisor/Pastor?
  • (*) What are two or three key principles for dealing with parents of youth?
  • What are some classes I can take or books to read that would help me most in preparing for leading youth?
  • What have you found works best in evangelizing unreached youth?
  • What recommendations do you have in balancing youth work and family?
  • What strategies do you use in dealing with conflict with the youth and the church?

When asking questions, direct the interview in the direction you want it to go based on your interest and calling.

  • Describe in one paragraph the setting and tone of the interview and the attitude and demeanor of both participants (you and the Youth Pastor; 100 word minimum).
  • Type up the questions that you asked in the interview and then write as best as you can remember (notes or permission to record interview might help) the answers the interviewee gave (500 word minimum for this portion).
  • Then in a separate section, answer the following questions (500 word minimum for this portion):
    • What did this interview confirm about your perceptions of a Youth Pastor’s role?
    • What did you learn from this interview that you did not know before?
    • How would you describe the Youth Minister’s response (honest and open? guarded? etc.)?
    • Based on the interview, what did you like or dislike about the Youth Program?
    • Explain where you sensed God was working in the life of the Youth Minister and in the youth program or church?
    • What else did you learn from this interview?

The assignment should be single-spaced in New Times Roman, 12-point font.

The grading percentages are as follows:

  • Interview—30 minute in-person interview with a qualified youth minister (40%).
  • Written portion (40%)
